Did you know that a ladybug can have up to 24 spots on their body?

Ladybugs are very small insects. They live in different places. There are more than 5,000 different species of ladybugs in the world. A ladybug’s scientific name is Coccinellidae. Ladybugs belong to the Insecta class. They are in the Animalia kingdom and their Phylum is Arthropoda.

Ladybugs eat small insects. They eat insects that have soft bodies like mites, whiteflies or scale insects.

Their predators are spiders, people and birds. Their main predator are birds because they hunt, kill and eat them. When their predators approach them, they pretend to die and their colours also warn them to stay away.

Some ladybugs have 24 spots on their body and some don’t have any. Ladybugs can live for two to three years. Ladybugs are not really bugs but they are beetles. A female ladybug can lay up to 100 eggs. Ladybugs bleed from their knees when they are threatened.

There are lots of ladybugs in the hedge in our school environment because they are good at protecting the leaves and the trees as they eat the smaller insects that attacks them.

Learning Intention: We are learning to write a description of a living creature in our school environment.
Success Criteria: I know I can do this when I follow the structure of a description to write about ladybugs.

    1. Hi Caitlin,
Thank you for your comment. I always check my spelling many times before I post a piece of work. What spelling mistake did you spot in my blog post?
      Thanks.
